Hooked on Books

WANT TO HELP? This is our wish list for helpers

Dr. Sarafinski with a Book

There are many ways you can help Hooked On Books! They can be listed in three categories:

Category 1

You can be a Reader or a Captain.

Reader:

Readers sign up for a flexible number of days to read to our children. Currently we are reading to youngsters at the Neighborhood Art House, Tenth and German. During the school year, we read from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. and 3:45 to 4:30p.m. During this summer, we will be reading for five weeks from June 21 to July 29, from 12:05 p.m. to 12:35p.m. Usually, summer readers sign up for one week at a time. You may fill out an application at our web-site (www.hoberie.org) or you may request a summer flyer by phoning the Hooked on Books! office at 814-871-7422.)

Captain:

If you work for a company or organization and you believe that you might be able to sign up several people to read at the noon hour during the summer, you can be a captain. See our web-site (www.hoberie.org) and phone Dr. Dolores J. Sarafinski at 814-871-7422 for more information and to request an application.

Category 2

You can, of course, contribute money at any time to our operating and expansion fund. Make your check out to Hooked On Books! and mail it to HOB! in care of Dr. Dolores Sarafinski, Hooked on Books! Office, Gannon University, 109 University Square, Erie, PA 16541-0001. Hooked on Books! is planning to expand its service to youngsters in several new sites and funds are needed for organization and tracking activities for such an expansion to be possible.

  • You may wish to to make a contribution to memorialize a loved one or suggest to friends that they may wish to make a contribution to Hooked on Books! "in lieu of flowers."
  • For the elderly relative or friend "who has everything," we suggest a gift donation to Hooked on Books! We will acknowledge these "celebration" donations with a personal acknowledgement including a picture of a volunteer reader with the child whose life is being enriched by reading because of your thoughtful remembrance.
  • Another way to give is with your book club at Christmas time. We benefited this way last Christmas. Friends in book clubs, who ordinarily presented books to needy children, decided that donating to Hooked on Books! provides not only the pleasure of books, but a caring adult to read the book to a child.

Category 3

If you have office skills, and some time to volunteer, you will be a popular person. Call Dr. Sarafinski. Her office is in the Gannon Human Resources Building, 111 West 5 th Street. You can arrange your hours to fit your availabilities. In this category, there is always a need for people skilled at keyboarding, data and spreadsheets, and other general office work.
