It Takes a Village...
"It takes a village to bring up a child," the wise men tell us. After 13 years of working to enrich the lives of children in the inner city by sharing our love of books with them, we agree that the wise men are right. It is so picturesque each summer to see 75 children reading one-on-one with 75 adult volunteers from Erie , Edinboro, North East, Girard, Fairview , Waterford , Meadville , Wattsburg, and Corry.
But it takes other concerned people of our community (our village) to make this happen.
Bruce Anderson, the Managing partner of the Outback Steakhouse, hosts our kick-off luncheon of captains each spring.
Chris Mohler, General Manager of Max & Erma's, provides gift certificates so we can thank those captains who bring us over 300 "reading pals" who give up their lunch hours to read to inner-city children during the summer.
Kim David, Manager of Starbucks, provides the dessert and coffee and tea at our orientation luncheon in June. She also collects children's books for us and recruits her staff to read.
Ginger Cowan, Community Relations Officer of Target, provided us with a gift card with which we can buy needed office supplies.
We are grateful to all of these loving people because with out them that bucolic scene of 75 adults reading to 75 children in June and July could not happen.
