A Call for Captains

Ashton Anderson, age 3, is Captain of the Hooked on Books! boat at the Outback steak house where his dad hosted the Captain's luncheon in the spring of 2003.

When you were a kid did you always want to be the captain—of a boat, a basketball team, a cheerleading squad? Here’s your chance! You can join a unique “team” with 36 captains. These are the leaders who recruit the 300+ readers we need for the summer session of Hooked on Books! at the Neighborhood Art House.

What exactly is a Captain?

She/He is the leader of a group of readers recruited for reading in the Hooked on Books! Program
She/He inspires the people in his/her organization (perhaps a business, firm, club, or church) to become readers for the children at the Inner City Art House.
She/He inspires colleagues to action—to dedicate a week each summer or a day a week during the school year to inspire the love of reading in inner city youth.

What are the duties of a Captain?

To find readers to share reading time to the children who attend classes at the Inner City Neighborhood Art House.
To work closely with the Hooked on Books! Director, Dr. Dolores Sarafinski to coordinate volunteer’s schedule with the needs of the Hooked on Books! program.
